Conqueror of the World
This incredible story of a young king, barely out of his teens, who took on the might of the Persian Empire and won military victories of staggering significance, is one of the greatest true tales ever told. From his homeland in the north of Greece, Alexander swept through southern Greece, crossed the Hellespont and marched through all of Asia Minor, the Middle East, Mesopotamia, and Egypt. He achieved incredible victories for eleven years of almost continual warfare against astounding odds, and was the only military leader in history never to suffer defeat in battle. From the almost legendary siege of Tyre (where he built a causeway across a kilometer of sea to reach his foe) to the great Battle of Gaugamela, Alexander seemed invincible, until he was undone at last by his own personal weakness. This book does not shy away from probing Alexander's dark personality traits and the degeneration of his personal life which caused his early death.

One of Ourselves
A fascinating and faithful account of President Kennedy's 3 1/2 day visit to Ireland in late June of 1963 - a day-by-day, hour-by-hour look at the places Kennedy visited; the people he met - political and cultural luminaries and average Irish citizens alike; the throngs who lined the roads to catch a glimpse of him or gathered to hear him speak; and the events that crowded his schedule.Exhaustively researched from written and oral sources, the book tells - and shows with 44 photos - a memorable tale of the president's "homecoming" to a people and land long etched in his heart and at last on the verge of taking their place in the modern world's politics and economy. In his Preface to the 2019 paperback edition, the author includes excerpts from the letter Mrs. Kennedy wrote to the Irish President Eamon de Valera two months after her husband was assassinated. "This moving letter was unknown to the public until after de Valera's papers at University College Dublin were opened to researchers in 2005."

The Year We Danced
With the number of Covid cases increasing and the death toll steadily rising, award-winning writer Stephen E. Smith decided it was appropriate-maybe even necessary-to write about happier, less stressful times. In a box of forgotten files, he rediscovered loose-leaf binders and keepsakes from his first year of college. It had been more than half a century but reading through his course notes, personal observations, and the clippings he'd torn from magazines and newspapers, he pieced together the events, good and bad, tender and tragic, that shaped his freshman year. Much of what he writes is disarmingly funny, but recalling the Civil Rights Movement, the War in Vietnam, and the complexities of finding himself a stranger in the South forced him to reassess a period of his life he'd long recalled as carefree. In this vivid and poignant mid-60s memoir, readers come to understand how friendship, a love of language and music, and the bittersweet remembrance of lost love can help sustain us through difficult times.

Loyalty First
Finalist, 2023 Army Historical Foundation Distinguished Writing Awards" ...provides critical texture to a historical figure often left pilloried without full context. The balanced treatment of a complex, flawed leader is valuable to understanding MacArthur's command and an instructive lesson for today's intelligence professionals and those who rely on intelligence to guide their decisions." -- Aether: A Journal of Strategic Airpower & SpacepowerMajor General Charles A. Willoughby served as Douglas MacArthur's stalwart chief intelligence officer (G-2} for over a decade, throughout World War II and the Korean War. This first full biography examines Willoughby's shadowy origins in his native Germany, his curious arrival in the United States, and his military service in World War I, as well as his work during the interwar years as a junior diplomat, budding historian, and neophyte intelligence officer. His chance encounter with MacArthur in the mid-1930s would prove to be the genesis of a near-symbiotic relationship between the two, with significant consequences for both.Throughout his life, Willoughby identified with strong, authoritarian leaders, notably Franco, and--especially--MacArthur. The author also assesses Willoughby's performance as a professional intelligence officer both in World War II and Korea, where he is often vilified for his inaccurate assessments of enemy strength and most likely courses of action, as well as his sycophantic relationship with his commander. Willoughby is most often criticized for his failing to foresee the entry of Chinese forces into the Korean War and its impact upon the US Army and the prosecution of the war. Following MacArthur's removal by President Truman in 1951, Willoughby retired and spent the rest of his days engaged in right-wing political activity and in staunchly defending his much-maligned boss. The legacy he left is one filled with lingering and important questions about loyalty to superiors, in civilian as well as military environments, how far that loyalty should extend, and walking the tightrope involved in telling truth to power.

Struggling for Democracy in Hong Kong
In Struggling for Democracy in Hong Kong: My Story, Cheng leads the reader on a journey across Hong Kong history from 1949 to 2020. Through his eyes, the fight for democracy in a country torn apart by colonization, was grueling, rewarding, and spanned decades upon decades of eloquently executed tête-à-têtes. Joseph Cheng is the very essence of what it means to be a proud Hong Kong citizen. He is a well-recognized political scientist and educator and an international media commentator on political developments in China and Hong Kong. Born and raised in the territory, Cheng pours his love for his birth land into a concise and sharply written memoir. In this detailed memoir, the reader vicariously experiences what it takes to bring Western ideology to the East and how Hong Kong people came together to rally for human rights. Supported by vigorous analyses and research, Cheng's memoir brings Hong Kong's democratic reforms to life as he tells of the attempts, successes and failures of pan-democrats, as well as his personal struggles and fight against a prolonged smear campaign.
