Vor 700 Jahren entstand das heute als Tower-Fechtbuch oder schlicht I.33 bekannte Manuskript, vermutlich im süddeutschen Raum, und ist damit das älteste bekannte Fechtbuch der Welt. Es behandelt in einer erstaunlich ausgefeilten Kombination aus Abbildungen und lateinischem Text ausschließlich die bereits im Hochmittelalter weit verbreitete Fechtkunst mit Schwert und Buckler. Heutzutage befindet sich die historische Handschrift in den Royal Armories in Leeds, Großbritannien. Ende der 1990er Jahre wurde die internationale Gemeinschaft historischer Fechter darauf aufmerksam und bemüht sich seither, eine funktionstüchtige Interpretation der darin enthaltenen Fechtkunst zu erarbeiten. Mit der hier vorliegenden Arbeit wird nun eine neue Sicht auf das I.33 gezeigt.Dieses Buch stellt eine hochinformative Quelle für alle dar, die sich für die mittelalterlichen Kampfkünste interessieren. Es präsentiert die damaligen Kampftechniken in Form eines Lehrbuchs: Die im I.33 gezeigten Huten, Hiebe und Stiche, Überbinden und Vorgehen, die Austrittstechniken wie Schildschlag, Arme nehmen, Durchtritt, Mutatio gladii etc., die mittelalterliche Beinarbeit und ein Großteil der Spiele werden ausgiebig analysiert, erläutert und in einen schlüssigen Gesamtkontext gestellt. Insbesondere praktische Fechter profitieren von der ausführlichen Darstellung in über 400 detaillierten Abbildungen und exakter Beschreibung.Der Autor legt mit diesem Buch eine neue Rekonstruktion der im I.33 gezeigten historischen Fechtkunst vor und zeigt, dass sie sowohl praxistauglich als auch plausibel und quellenkonform ist. Dabei wird veranschaulicht, dass die einstige Fechtlehre nicht nur hocheffiziente Kampftechniken sondern zugleich überraschend ausgefeilte didaktische Strukturen enthält. Das mittelalterliche Manuskript wurde einst ganz offensichtlich nicht nur als Grundlage für ein realistisches und zugleich relativ sicheres Training geschaffen. Es bot darüber hinaus sehr effektive Mittel, um im Kampf den Überblick zu bewahren und den Gegner zu kontrollieren. Denn eigentlich geht es bei der Ausübung von Kampfkunst genau darum - Kontrolle ist der Schlüssel zum Sieg, heute, ebenso wie damals.
