When a decades-long court battle resulted in her family's freedom in 1855, seven-year-old Mary Mildred Williams unexpectedly became the face of American slavery. Famous abolitionists Thomas Wentworth Higginson, Henry David Thoreau, and John Albion Andrew would help Mary and her family in freedom, but Senator Charles Sumner saw a monumental political opportunity. Due to generations of sexual violence, Mary's skin was so light that she "passed" as white, and this fact would make her the key to his white audience's sympathy. During his sold-out abolitionist lecture series, Sumner paraded Mary in front of rapt audiences as evidence that slavery was not bounded by race.Weaving together long-overlooked primary sources and arresting images, including the daguerreotype that turned Mary into the poster child of a movement, Jessie Morgan-Owens investigates tangled generations of sexual enslavement and the fraught politics that led Mary to Sumner. She follows Mary's story through the lives of her determined mother and grandmother to her own adulthood, parallel to the story of the antislavery movement and the eventual signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.Girl in Black and White restores Mary to her rightful place in history and uncovers a dramatic narrative of travels along the Underground Railroad, relationships tested by oppression, and the struggles of life after emancipation. The result is an exposé of the thorny racial politics of the abolitionist movement and the pervasive colorism that dictated where white sympathy lay-one that sheds light on a shameful legacy that still affects us profoundly today.

Einer breiten Mehrheit wurde nach der Flut vielleicht zum ersten Mal deutlich: Der Klimawandel ist in Deutschland angekommen.Am Tag nach der Katastrophe machten sich die Mitglieder des DOCKS Kollektivs auf die Reise ins Ahrtal, um die Lage vor Ort zu fotografieren und mit Betroffenen zu sprechen. Die Arbeit als Kollektiv ermöglichte es den fünf Fotograf:innen, an mehreren Orten gleichzeitig zu arbeiten.Zwei Wochen lang fotografierten die fünf Mitglieder durchgehend im Ahrtal und in den von der Flut betroffenen Regionen, dokumentierten ihre Erfahrungen, die Erzählungen der Menschen, die unfassbare Zerstörung und die große Solidarität der Helfenden.Schnell war klar, dass der Aufbau der zerstörten Gebiete einen langen Atem brauchen würde. Als das mediale Interesse wieder abnahm, beschloss das Kollektiv, die Region, die zahlreichen Helfenden, Feuerwehrleute und Betroffenen weiterhin zu besuchen. Ein Jahr lang wurden die Mitglieder Zeugen von Verlust und immenser Trauer, aber auch von beeindruckender Solidarität, Hilfsbereitschaft und Ausdauer.

Yet the work of these artists has largely been excluded from the documented history of photography in the United States.Through individual profiles of more than eighty photographers from the early history of the photographic medium to the present, Elizabeth Ferrer introduces readers to Latinx portraitists, photojournalists, and documentarians and their legacies. She traces the rise of a Latinx consciousness in photography in the 1960s and '70s and the growth of identity-based approaches in the 1980s and '90s. Ferrer argues that in many cases a shared sense of struggle has motivated photographers to work purposefully, driven by a deep sense of resistance, social and political commitments, and cultural affirmation, and she highlights the significance of family photos to their approaches and outlooks. Located in the heart of the famed Bluegrass Region, Woodford County is one of the oldest counties in Kentucky.Prominent citizens met in 1788 to create a new county government before Kentucky was a state and the area was still part of Virginia. These individuals included attorney and minister Caleb Wallace, who would be the founder of several colleges, and Thomas Marshall, the father of US Supreme Court chief justice John Marshall. With some of the finest pastureland in the world, the nearby Kentucky River for transportation, and an enterprising and industrious population, Woodford soon became one of the more prosperous counties in the state. Today, Woodford County is a community of the 21st century, but it is still known for its Thoroughbred horses, bourbon distilleries, rolling landscapes, and stone fences.The Woodford County Historical Society, Inc., has searched its collections to present a pictorial history of the county from the mid-1800s through 1950. Woodford County Historical Society, Inc., was founded in 1966 with the mission "to engage people in the discovery, interpretation, and excitement of Woodford County's past." To carry out its mission, it operates a research and genealogy library and a small museum in downtown Versailles, Kentucky.

In Riding Shotgun with Norman Wallace, award-winning geographer William Wyckoff celebrates the photographic legacy of Norman Grant Wallace, whose work as an Arizona highway engineer during the first half of the twentieth century afforded him the opportunity to survey every corner of the Grand Canyon State. Possessing a passion for photography, Wallace documented Arizona throughout his travels. From 1906 to 1969 Wallace photographed the state's natural and rural landscapes; its burgeoning infrastructure including roads, bridges, and dams; and its towns and cities, some of which experienced exponential growth following World War II.Nearly one hundred years later, Wyckoff retraces Wallace's southwestern travels using the engineer's photographs and meticulous notebooks as a guide. The author rephotographs many of Wallace's iconic vantage points, giving us a historical tour of Arizona, a 'then-and-now' viewpoint that also tells the personal story of Wyckoff's own vicarious travels with Wallace through Arizona's vast countryside and its urban centers and small towns.
