Tells the forgotten but surprising stories of the many handsome and significant buildings in downtown Troy, New York.Winner of the 2021 Antoinette Forrester Downing Book Award presented by the Society of Architectural Historians Winner of the 2020 Excellence in Historic Preservation Award presented by the Preservation League of New York State Located about 150 miles north of Manhattan, on the east bank of the Hudson River, the city of Troy, New York, was once an industrial giant. It led the nation in iron production throughout much of the nineteenth century, and its factories turned out bells and cast-iron stoves that were sold the world over. Its population was both enterprising and civic-minded.Along with Troy's economic success came the public, commercial, educational, residential, and religious buildings to prove it. Stores, banks, churches, firehouses, and schools, both modest and sophisticated, sprouted up in the latest architectural styles, creating a lively and fashionable downtown. Row houses and brownstones for the middle class and the wealthy rivaled those in Brooklyn and Manhattan.By the mid-twentieth century, however, Troy had dwindled in both prominence and population. Downtown stagnated, leaving building facades and interiors untouched, often for decades. A late-blooming urban-renewal program demolished many blocks of buildings, but preservationists fought back. Today, reinvestment is accelerating, and Troy now boasts what the New York Times has called "one of the most perfectly preserved nineteenth-century downtowns in the United States."This book tells the stories behind the many handsome and significant buildings in downtown Troy and how they were designed and constructed-stories that have never been pulled together before. For the first time in generations, scores of Troy buildings are again linked with their architects, some local but others from out of town (the "starchitects" of their day) and even from Europe. From Coyote to Anansi to Shakespeare's fools, the trickster holds the trump card when the chips are down, the stakes are high, and the owner of the casino is the President of the United States. We posit the wicked pleasures of the trickster tale as an enticing alternative to dreary disaster-capitalist narratives, technocratic solutionism, and universalist fictions of Authority, Progress, Unity, and Truth. Art History is centrally concerned with a vast array of three-dimensional objects, such as sculptures, and spaces, such as architecture. Digital technologies allow the creation of virtual spaces, which in turn allow us to simulate and compare aspects of a visual culture's three-dimensional timespace that cannot be communicated as a single, still image.The third issue, thus, focusses on the third dimension in Art History, and the digital realm that continues to mediate and transform it.

Hatching: Piranesi & Tafuri presents an interpretation and a critical design proposal, it was inspired by Manfredo Tafuri's essay The Wicked Architect: G.B. Piranesi, Heterotopia and the Voyage. Tafuri's essay was published as the introductory chapter to his book The Sphere and the Labyrinth, Avant-Gardes and Architecture from Piranesi to the 1970s.The book is organised as a kind of journey that travels between Tafuri's writing about Piranesi and the design of a one kilometre long housing block, known as Corviale that was built in the 1970s on the southwestern periphery of Rome.Hatching: Piranesi & Tafuri is a re-working of an earlier publication of the same title, published in 2015 by the Big Air World. It is a supplement to Utopian Adventure: The Corviale Void, which was published in 2012 and suported by a scholarship from the British School at Rome, awarded to the author in 2010.

Abstract is the yearly publication of work and research from the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture Planning and Preservation. Produced through the Office of the Dean Amale Andraos, the archive of student work contains documentation of exceptional projects, selected by faculty at the conclusion of each semester. The 2017 edition includes the applied research of the school's laboratories and projects from design studios taught by Eric Bunge and Mimi Hoang, Kersten Geers, Juan Herreros, Steven Holl, Andres Jaque, Momoyo Kaijima and Yoshiharu Tsukumoto, and Laura Kurgan, Jing Liu, LOT-EK, Reinhold Martin, Umberto Napolitano, Kate Orff, Jorge Otero-Pailos, Rural Urban Framework, Hilary Sample, Bernard Tschumi, and Enrique Walker and many others. This encyclopedic volume is conceived as both an organizational model for the school and a testament to the global distribution of the work included within.
