Gender in Film and Video tracks changes in gender on screen by documenting trends of the internet age. It focuses on six instances of media in transition and the histories behind them. These include the rise of feminism on television, in sports events and in comedy-drama series; the growth of DIY production by underrepresented groups through crowdfunding and YouTube channels; and struggles between fans and producers over control of casting and storytelling. The breakdown of the categories (content, production, reception) that top-down production/distribution in TV and cinema tended to keep distinct will be a major focus of this volume. Analyzing films including Paranormal Activity, It Follows, and Get Out, videogames including Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Layers of Fear, and Until Dawn, and TV shows including The Walking Dead and American Horror Story, Monstrous Forms argues for understanding horror through its sensational address, and dissects the forms that make that address so effective.

Here is an excellent reference book on "first run" syndication--the distribution of programs either made exclusively for non-network play, or of programs intended for network telecasts but ultimately making their debuts in syndication. Bringing together information not easily found, this work covers the classics such as Sea Hunt, Highway Patrol, The Merv Griffin Show and the Muppet Show, as well as such once-popular but now obscure productions as China Smith, Ripcord and The Littlest Hobo. Coverage goes back to 1947 and the book includes a number of series ignored in other works. The first section is an overview of the concept of syndication from its earliest application in the newspaper world to the attempt by Fox Television to become a fourth network. The next four sections each cover ten years of syndication, listing the shows (with full background--who produced them and why, who liked them and why, etc.) alphabetically by title under the following genres: Adventure/Mystery, Children's, Comedy, Drama, Game/Quiz, Informational, Music/Variety, Religious, Sports, Talk/Interview, Travel/Documentary, Westerns, and Women's.

Inhaltsangabe:Einleitung: Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der verdeckten Wirkung prosozialer Handlungen in Fernsehserien am Beispiel der "Simpsons". Zeichentrickserien sind mittlerweile zu einem festen Bestandteil der Kultur geworden: trotz aller Kritik hinsichtlich oft klischeehaft und überzeichneter Darstellungen können sie doch als Kulturprodukte angesehen werden, in denen manchmal der Gesellschaft in symbolischer Form ein Spiegel vorgehalten wird. Normen und Werte werden in (Zeichentrick-) Serien ebenso thematisiert; eventuelle Lösungsmöglichkeiten, die im Alltagserleben des Zuschauers liegen, werden aber eher seltener geboten: dafür läßt der Zeichentrickfilm zu viele künstlerische Möglichkeiten offen, die das Unmögliche möglich machen. In der Diskussion über Medieninhalte und Medienwirkungen werden, beinahe schon traditionell, zwar die in den Medien dargestellten aggressiven Verhaltensweisen berücksichtigt, das prosoziale Verhaltenspotential wird hingegen weitgehend vernachlässigt. Ausgehend von dieser Überlegung sollten vor allem die verdeckten prosozialen Wirkungen auf Rezipienten untersucht werden, wozu sich gerade Fernsehserien wie "Die Simpsons" eignen, da hier prosoziale Verhaltensweisen oft nicht offen sichtbar gemacht werden im Gegensatz zu Fernsehserien wie z. B. den "Waltons". Ein Ziel der vorliegenden Untersuchung sollte sein, positive Verhaltensgrundmuster in der genannten Zeichentrickserieaufzufinden und hinsichtlich ihrer Wirkung auf den Rezipienten zu beschreiben.
