Nicht nur kleine Schwellenländer, sondern auch Industrienationen können davon betroffen sein. Gerade Industrienationen haben ihren Wohlstand über Schulden finanziert und so eine hohe Schuldenlast auf-gebaut.Bei der Betrachtung der Schuldenlasten müssen Zentralbanken mit ein-bezogen werden. Sie beeinflussen mit ihrer Geldpolitik die Finanzpolitik der Staaten. Dies können sie aber nur, wenn sie unabhängig von der Politik sind und ihre Leitlinien selbst bestimmen können. Diese Unabhängigkeit kann gemessen werden und wirkt sich positiv auf die Preisstabilität aus.Wachsende Staatsverschuldung grenzt den Handlungsspielraum eines Staates ein. Steigende Ausgaben für Zinsen und Tilgung verringern den Betrag, der für andere Ausgaben verbleibt. Es gibt Grenzen, an die ein Staat stößt, wenn seine Staatschulden steigen. Außerdem wirkt sich eine hohe Staatsverschuldung negativ auf verschiedene Bereiche des Staates aus. Schulden und Zinsen können gesenkt werden. Auch hier stößt der Staat an Grenzen. Trotzdem müssen die betroffenen Länder Reformen durch-setzten, um die wachsende Schuldenlast zu verringern. Geschieht dies nicht, ist ein Staatsbankrott möglich. Dieser kann durch das Eingreifen der Zentralbank verhindert werden. Das wiederum kann zu inflationären Tendenzen führen und es ist schwierig für eine Zentralbank aus dieser Politik auszusteigen.Ein Staatsbankrott in einer Industrienation ist möglich und hat weitreichende Auswirkungen. Diese gilt es durch Reformen abzumildern und zu verhindern.
