In den 1950er- und 1960er-Jahren leistete der Schweizer Georg Gerster (1928 bis 2019) Pionierarbeit in der Luftbildfotografie. Er entdeckte die Welt von oben neu, er war ein Denker mit Scharfblick, der den Dingen auf den Grund ging. Seine erste Leidenschaft war aber das Schreiben. Gerster war ein hervorragender Autor und lange wissenschaftlicher Redaktor bei der Weltwoche. Erst später kam zu seiner Sprachkunst auch das Fotografieren hinzu. Aus der Not heraus: Zu seinen journalistischen Texten fehlten Fotos, die seinem Anspruch genügten. Er brachte sich das Fotografieren selbst bei und reiste von da an rund um die Welt, um Länder, Menschen, Kulturen und Landschaften zu dokumentieren. Seine Reisen führten ihn oft an Orte, die anderen verborgen blieben. So begleitete er etwa die erste Apollo-Mondlandung der NASA 1969 in Cape Canaveral - journalistisch wie fotografisch. Einige Bilder sind in dieser Du-Ausgabe zu sehen. Georg Gerster liess sich selten von den Umständen abhalten, um seine Fotos machen zu können. Er war durchsetzungsstark und scheute keine Risiken, lehnte sich weit aus Flugzeugen durch die Öffnung der immer entfernten Tür, damit er freie Sicht hatte. So war es auch bei seinem ersten Fotoflug 1963 im Sudan, wo er Tempel, Pyramiden und Festungen des antiken Nubien dokumentierte. Es sollten ungezählte Flüge folgen, immer inspiriert von Gersters Begeisterung für die Schönheit der Welt, die von oben gesehen noch einmal anders und besonders erscheint. Sie zeigt sich in nie gesehenen, aufregenden Mustern, geformt von der Natur oder vom Menschen. Gersters Archiv umfasst über eine Million Flugbildaufnahmen aus über hundert Ländern, fotografiert über sechs Jahrzehnte hinweg. Sein Vermächtnis wird seit 2019 professionell vom Estate Georg Gerster weitergeführt. In dieser Ausgabe der Kulturzeitschrift "Du" werden einige Arbeiten aus dem Archiv gezeigt, die zu Georg Gersters Lieblingsbildern zählten.
