Im vorliegenden Text wird auf verschiedene Definitionen von Elite eingegangen und deutlich gemacht, warum sich Teile der Öffentlichkeit mit der Bezeichung Elite schwertun. Wie bei vielen Begriffen, die in öffentlichen Diskursen häufig auftreten, lässt sich eineeinheitliche Definition von Elite kaum finden. Dem Wortursprung nach, es stammt aus demFranzösischen "èlire" abgeleitet von dem lateinischen Wort "eligere", kommt Elite vonwählen, auswählen. Bezogen auf das Lateinische kann man auch eine Verbindung zur Bibelziehen, in der verkündet ist, dass viele berufen, aber nur wenige erwählt sind.
