Finding the Constitution is a detailed and highly readable account of English constitutional history. It examines the gripping story of the origins of the nation's system of government and asks whether there was a common law Constitution and where surviving institutions came from. In religious reforms, books and other forms of written communication play a dominant role, both for individuals as well as for groups. Covering the period from the late Middle Ages to the early seventeenth century, the chapters of this volume reflect on the use of books in religious reform movements and their impact on lay people and monastic communities. For those committed to religious renewal, books are the necessary and often enthusiastically welcomed vehicles for the transmission of religious reform concepts. They are at the same time often the objects of severe opposition and negative reactions in attempts at hindering or reversing religious reform for others. The researchers make use of approaches from cultural history, book history and English studies, among others. Contributions range from theory and practices of religious reform with special regard to the interaction between the laity and religious orders in their search for models of 'good religious living' to research on the changing processes of communication from manuscript to print and their impact on religious renewal.

Conflict and war were common during the Reformation era. Throughout the sixteenth century, rising religious and political tensions led to frequent conflict and culminated in the Thirty Years' War (1618-48) that devastated much of Germany and killed one-third of its population. Some of the warfare, as in central and southern Europe, was between Christians and Muslims. Other warfare, in central and northwestern Europe, was confessional warfare between Catholics and Protestants. Religion was not the only cause of war during the period. Revolts, territorial ambitions, and the beginnings of the contemporary nation-state system and international order that emerged after the Treaty of Westphalia (1648) also fueled the trauma and tragedy of war. In many ways, the world of the Reformers and Protestant Reformation was a violent world, and it was within such a sociopolitical framework that the Reformers and their followers lived, worked, and died. This book introduces the teachings of the Protestant Reformers on war and peace, in their context, before offering relevant primary source readings.

As the 400th anniversary of the outbreak of the Thirty Years War approaches, Geoff Mortimer provides a timely re-assessment of its origins. Drawing on recent research, he challenges the conventional view that the war was almost inevitable, a result either of the inexorable growth of inter-confessional tensions in Germany over the preceding forty years, or of the wider international conflicts between Spain, France and the Dutch. Hence he argues that the Bohemian revolt of 1618 was not, as has often been suggested, merely the spark to the powder keg, but the initial substantive cause of the war.<BR><BR>Most histories deal only briefly with the circumstances occasioning the revolt, but The Origins of the Thirty Years War and the Revolt in Bohemia, 1618 offers the fullest modern account. Erasmus was not only one of the most widely read authors of the early modern period, but one of the most controversial. For some readers he represented the perfect humanist scholar; for others, he was an arrogant hypercritic, a Lutheran heretic and polemicist, a virtuoso writer and rhetorician, an inventor of a new, authentic Latin style, etc. In the present volume, a number of aspects of Erasmus's manifold reception are discussed, especially lesser-known ones, such as his reception in Neo-Latin poetry. The volume does not focus only on so-called Erasmians, but offers a broader spectrum of reception and demonstrates that Erasmus's name also was used in order to authorize completely un-Erasmian ideals, such as atheism, radical reformation, Lutheranism, religious intolerance, Jesuit education, Marian devotion, etc. Contributors include: Philip Ford, Dirk Sacré, Paul J. Warum soll man sich mit Philipp Melanchthon und Johannes Calvin außerhalb von jährlichen Erinnerungsfeiern beschäftigen? Beide Theologen waren umfassend humanistisch gebildet und sind über den Weg der Sprache auf biblische Texte gestoßen und haben so die Reformationen in Wittenberg und in Genf wesentlich befördert. Ohne den Hintergrund humanistisch-philologischer Ausbildung wären sie theologisch nicht kompetent gewesen und hätten die Tiefenstruktur der biblischen Texte nicht aufnehmen können. Die politischen und sozialen Herausforderungen waren für beide Reformatoren sehr verschieden, wobei jedoch der humanistische Bildungsgrund so etwas wie eine Sensibilisierung für Vielfalt entstehen ließ. Die theologisch-reformatorischen Modelle sind insofern bedenkenswert und faszinierend, weil sie auf die Grundfragen christlicher Existenz, Bildung und Erziehung, christlicher Praxis und Ethik antworten.

Genauer betrachtet werden die Erziehungsziele dieser Zeit und welche neuen Anforderungen an die Lehrer gestellt wurden. Es ist sehr interessant zu beobachten, aus welcher Motivation heraus und mit welchem Engagement sich bestimmte Personen nach dem Mittelalter daran machten, eine Neuordnung in der Gesellschaft und somit auch im Bildungssystem voranzubringen. Im Mittelpunkt dieser Arbeit steht ein Mann, der im deutschsprachigen Raum bedeutende Veränderungen in der Bildung erzielte. Philipp Melanchthon machte diese Themengebiete mit zu den Hauptaufgaben seines Wirkens. Vor allem Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts beherrschte das Phänomen der Glaubensspaltung maßgeblich die historische Bühne. Technische Entwicklungen und neue Entdeckungen dieser Zeit zwang viele Gelehrte, den Blick auf den Gebiet der Bildung in eine andere Richtung zu lenken. Würde man jeden einzelnen Aspekt der zur Reform geführt hat betrachten, würde es den Rahmen dieser Arbeit sprengen. Philipp Melanchthon war der wichtigster Vertreter der humanistischen Bildung, darüber sind sich die meisten Autoren1 einig und deshalb verdient er das Hauptaugenmerk. Er war derjenige, der viele Theorien der Erziehung in die Tat umsetzte, obgleich eigene oder gleichgesinnter humanistischer Denker dieser Zeit. Das die Bildungsbewegung des Humanismus, angeführt von Erasmus von Rotterdam, zum Bildungsprogramm wurde, ist Leistung von Philipp Melanchtho n. Unter seinem Talent formierten sich die Universitäten im humanistischen Geist.

Vom 15. bis ins beginnende 18. Jahrhundert lässt sich eine intensive Rezeption der Kirchenväter in Texten unterschiedlicher Provenienz feststellen. Diese Wiederaneignung der patristischen Tradition verlief vor allem unter zwei historischen und systematischen Umständen: einerseits unter den Bedingungen der Reformtheologie der entstehenden Konfessionen, in deren Folge der 'consensus patrum' die Authentizität der 'wahren Kirche' gewährleistete. Andererseits wurde diese Väterrezeption durch die seit dem 16. Jahrhundert einsetzende philosophie- und theologiegeschichtliche Tradition der 'philosophia perennis' bedeutsam. Von der Antike bis zur zeitgenössischen Gelehrsamkeit waren der 'consensus patrum' zusammen mit der 'translatio sapientiae' die Voraussetzung für diese Tradition.
