Long Time No Sea - A Look at Life Through the Mask of a Scuba Diver
This book is an interwoven collection of anecdotes plucked from journals and scuba diving dive logs that follows a path that steers through a crushed dream, loss, despair, anguish, and reconnection. Each story closes with a take-away message and climaxes with big-picture perspectives that became a life's rudder as I navigate through my journey. I learned how to thrive from what I gleaned through my interactions with different people and the life in Planet Ocean. After addiction took his partner and ended their adventure of love and romance, Jeff drifted alone and without purpose, surviving misfortunes, catastrophes, and despair until he stumbled into a long-lasting relationship. While driven by a forty-year passion for scuba diving, he gained life-guiding wisdom from an unexpected source-Planet Ocean. In discovering an intimate connection between man and the world below, Jeff realized he was part of an immensely harmonious universe and he learned how to easily connect with anyone, anywhere. In this memoir, you will meet more people than fish. Travel with him through Mexico, the Caribbean, and remote Central America. Jeff takes you into the depths of the sea, through a hurricane, a heart attack, and the emotional and spiritual ups and downs with which we all wrestle. His story could be similar to yours-even if you've never traveled or put on a scuba-diving mask.<BR>

Anywhere
In 1993, Fran and her husband, Tim, had a stable and comfortable life in Vermont with their two young children, Casey and Julia. Living in a house they had built themselves, it seemed a dream existence: Fran had achieved her goal of becoming a Waldorf teacher, and the children were growing up in a supportive community with close friends. But Franny and Tim were restless. That year they made the radical decision to sell their house, quit their jobs, and embark on a sailing adventure aboard Anywhere, a forty-two-foot Vagabond ketch. The plan was to sail up the St. Lawrence River, east on the Erie Canal, and down the Hudson River to the Intracoastal Waterway, cruising south along the Atlantic seacoast and into the Caribbean. The following year, they did just that. For four years, on and off, the family lived aboard Anywhere, with Tim as captain, navigating the sometimes perilous waters of the Caribbean, and Franny as first mate, setting sails and homeschooling their children. Island-hopping through the Bahamas and West Indies, they eventually sailed to South America. Nearly every day during those four years, Fran Mallery kept a journal of their adventures aboard Anywhere. In Anywhere: A Journal of Adventures at Sea, she has chronicled, with sensitivity and vivid language, her family's many life-changing adventures and the amazing variety of places and people they encountered while living under sail.

Achenwall'S Observations On North America
A magnet for curious minds and quiet investigators alike, this is north America as seen through a perceptive eighteenth¿century gaze that still resonates today.Gottfried Achenwall's Observations On North America blends travel writing with historical geography and early ethnography, offering a North American description shaped by colonial travelogue sensibilities. The author records landscapes, climate, settlements, and social life with a scholar's curiosity and a traveller's eye, yielding insights that appeal to both academic researchers and general readers. The prose invites you to walk with him through British North America, noting indigenous peoples notes and the evolving textures of place with respect and restraint. It is a work that enriches library collections and university syllabi alike, inviting thoughtful comparison with other early modern accounts while remaining accessible to curious readers. This edition is more than a reprint-it is a carefully restored archive, renewed for today's and future generations of readers. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions, it serves as a collector's item and a cultural treasure. Whether you are a specialist in colonial history, a student of travel writing, or a lover of classic literature, this volume merits a place on serious shelves and in thoughtful study. Achenwall's observations endure as a spoke of historical geography and as a compelling human record of eighteenth century america.

Cuba Hasta Siempre
Magdalena Solé first visited Cuba in 2011 and has returned every year since, enchanted by the place and the people who live in this slender stretch of land. Her photographs reveal the stirrings of transformation, however subtle and hard to see, and reflect a Cuba that is both tough and vulnerable. Cuba hasta siempre consists of more than 150 full-color photographs taken by Solé, accompanied by a foreword written by Time columnist and travel writer Pico Iyer. With minimal text, this book offers a view of Cuba beyond the tourist trade and the wealthy upper class. The photographs portray everyday settings and people engaged in daily tasks. A visual encounter with magical realism, this collection constructs an atmosphere of pervasive timelessness, a photographic time capsule. Memorabilia and objects from Cuba's revolutionary past linger in the present, while life goes on. These soulful images offer a new visual perspective on Cuba past and present. The Wall Street Journal called Solé's images "lushly colorful," "formally striking," "restless," and "electrify[ing].

This Is Cuba
USA Today New and Noteworthy - One of The Washington Post's 10 Books to Read--and Gift--in December Fascinating. --Forbes Fidel Castro is dead. Donald Trump was elected president. And to most outsiders, the fate of Cuba has never seemed more uncertain. Yet those who look close enough may recognize that signs of the next revolution are etched in plain view. This is Cuba is a true story that begins in the summer of 2009 when a young American photo-journalist is offered the chance of a lifetime--a two-year assignment in Havana. For David Ariosto, the island is an intriguing new world, unmoored from the one he left behind. From neighboring military coups, suspected honey traps, salty spooks, and desperate migrants to dissidents, doctors, and Havana's empty shelves, Ariosto uncovers the island's subtle absurdities, its Cold War mystique, and the hopes of a people in the throes of transition. Beyond the classic cars, salsa, and cigars lies a country in which black markets are ubiquitous, free speech is restricted, privacy is curtailed, sanctions wreak havoc, and an almost Kafka-esque goo of Soviet-style bureaucracy still slows the gears of an economy desperate to move forward. But life in Cuba is indeed changing, as satellite dishes and internet hotspots dot the landscape and more Americans want in. Still, it's not so simple. The old sentries on both sides of the Florida Straits remain at their posts, fists clenched and guarding against the specter of a Cold War that never quite ended, despite the death of Fidel and the hand-over of the presidency to a man whose last name isn't Castro. And now, a crisis is brewing. In This Is Cuba, Ariosto looks at Cuba from the inside-out over the course of nine years, endeavoring to expose clues for what's in store for the island as it undergoes its biggest change in more than half a century.
