NOTES FROM A MARINE BIOLOGIST'S DAUGHTER
Notes from a Marine Biologist's Daughter renders in poems the inheritance of a love of the wild, love of language, love of family. Loss, grief, and recovery resolve in a closely observed, deeply felt connection to nature.
In these mostly lyrical quiet poems, we find tenderness in an animal's behavior, comfort in the sounds of a storm, an awareness that nature has a life that does not depend on us, that needs to be left alone, but from which we can learn and, when we need it, be comforted. The tonal range of these poems is extensive, including exuberance and grief, seeking and confirmation, solitude and solidarity.
Two worlds are closely noted in this collection of autobiographical poems, the childhood world of Wrightsville Sound and the adult daughter's world of south Florida. Infused in the experience of both of these worlds, past and present, is the enduring presence and power of a marine biologist mother.
Fletchers on the Farm
'We jumped in at the deep end and bought a farm! A reluctant wife, a couple of crazy kids and a husband whose knowledge of farming you could write on the back of a stamp... What could go wrong?!' - Kelvin 'Exactly! And the journey has only just begun...' - Liz Join the Fletchers as they navigate the peaks and troughs of life on a lively farm. When Kelvin and Liz Fletcher left their happy home in Oldham for a 120-acre farm in the Peak District, they were totally unaware of the surprises that lay in store. In Fletchers on the Farm, childhood sweethearts Kelvin and Liz reflect on their history, their future and their daily balancing act of juggling acting careers, four young children and a farmyard full of animals. With wise words on building and nurturing a happy farm and family, this uplifting, heartwarming book is about following your dreams - even if you have no clue how to do it! Time to pull on those wellies and get stuck into a farming adventure like no other. 'Like any farm, determination and perseverance are vital. We took a huge step into the unknown and, together, we haven't looked back. The adventure continues!'

Jane Goodall
This essential biography of one of the most influential women of the past century shows how truly remarkable Jane Goodall’s accomplishments have been. Goodall was a secretarial school graduate when Louis Leakey, unable to find someone with more fitting credentials, first sent her to Gombe to study chimpanzees. In this acclaimed work, Dale Peterson details how this young woman of uncommon resourcefulness and pluck would go on to set radically new standards in the study of animal behavior. He vividly captures the triumphs and setbacks of her dramatic life, including the private quest that led to her now-famous activism.

Peterson, a longtime Goodall collaborator, has a unique knowledge of his subject. Candid and illuminating, this work will be a revelation even to readers who are familiar with the public Goodall as presented in her own writing.

From God to Climate Change
The journey of Albert Garnier's 30-year mission in China to scientist son Ben's fight with the riddle of the world. This is my story of my grandfather and father, and the divergent paths they took in respective 30-year-plus careers to influence seemingly unrelated world trends continuing to this day - one to contribute 'body, mind and spirit' to the extraordinary rise of China to become a world power and the other to detail the damage to Earth of human-induced climate change, decades before the rest of the world woke up to it. Each career logically leads to a 'modern day' synopsis of their perspective of life based on their major achievements.Alberto Giovanni Garnier, a Waldensian Italian who in 1948 became Albert John Garnier and a British citizen, was an influential Protestant (Baptist) missionary to China for 30 years. Between 1906 and 1936, Albert, or Chia Liyan (¿¿¿) as Chinese named him, was known to millions through his many radio talks and publications. In 1933, he was instrumental in founding a religious radio station in Shanghai, from which he frequently broadcast across China.A noted linguist, the story highlights Albert's harrowing account of his imprisonment without trial on the Isle of Man during World War II even though he had been appointed a Censor to monitor war-time China and Italian mail services.Benjamin John Garnier, his son, was a scientist. As a climatologist, over 40 years of research and thinking in New Zealand, Nigeria, United States, Canada and Italy he came to believe that the solution to the problems threatening Earth resided squarely in the three-part evolution of the human brain. Earth is going to end up a living hell if we don't learn how to ignore the destructive messages coming from the more primitive parts of our brains. It is also the story of my relationship with Albert and Ben through 25 years of family separation. I never met Albert, although he constantly wrote to me through my teenage years after my father left his family stranded in New Zealand in 1950. It would not be until 1975 that I caught up with Ben and repaired our relationship.

Grounded by Granite
On Loon Island, a granite mound in a pristine lake near Frontenac Provincial Park in the Ontario Canadian Shield, post-war summer days for Patti and her siblings overflowed with swimming, fishing and hunting for snapping turtles. Life seemed perfect until a shocking letter from the Department of Lands and Forests questioned their ownership of the land.Grounded by Granite transports you to a time when cottage life spelled simplicity. A time of scary campfires and harmonized voices drifting over the surface of a moonlit lake. An era where families played Snakes and Ladders by the light of coal oil lamps and kids read comics under the covers by flashlight. Experience the ancestral traditions of a quirky yet lovable cast of extended family members at a lake where summers seemed to last forever. From the award-winning author of Nepal One Day at a Time, a haunting, and at times comical, memoir of close family bonds and wilderness experiences that produced a solo adventure traveller and global humanitarian.
