Jules Diserens, né en 1855, enfant illégitime d'une jeune domestique, fait fortune en Russie tsariste. De simple précepteur, il devient millionnaire et co-propriétaire d'une entreprise d'électrotechnique à Saint-Pétersbourg. Ensuite, il se retire à Lausanne où il fait bâtir des immeubles de luxe. Mais à l'arrivée de la Première Guerre mondiale, la clientèle se fait rare et Jules fait faillite.Dans cette situation difficile, il retourne en Russie et se lance dans une activité au sein d'une grande entreprise métallurgique. Ses deux fils ainés, qui ont fait des études en Suisse, trouvent également des emplois en Russie. Mais à peine sont-ils tous installés, la révolution éclate et chacun doit trouver ses moyens pour survivre aux horreurs du régime bolchévique. Ce n'est qu'en 1920 que les Diserens peuvent collectivement rejoindre la Suisse par un train de rapatriement. De retour à Lausanne, Jules est sans le sou et trop vieux pour trouver un emploi. Son seul soutien est une contribution de son fils Charles qui couvre à peine ses besoins ainsi que ceux de sa femme et d'une fille encore mineure. Et en peu de temps, toute la famille est dispersée aux quatre vents. Ce récit aborde sous des angles souvent peu conventionnels les thèmes de la migration, du rôle des femmes dans l'histoire ainsi que des tabous qui existent dans beaucoup de familles.
