Das Darstellen des Sehens ist ein zentrales Thema in der Kunst von Markus Raetz (1941-2020). Mit der Silhouette eines Fernglassichtfelds hat er dafür bei Zeemansblik eine so schlichte wie überzeugende Form gefunden. Von diesem Zinkblech-Relief entstanden zwischen 1985 und 1999 rund zwanzig Fassungen in unterschiedlichsten Dimensionen. Das titelgebende niederländische Wort Zeemansblik (wörtlich: Blick des Seemannes) kann mit Seeblick übersetzt werden. Blik bedeutet jedoch zugleich auch Blech. Die Doppeldeutigkeit des Titels weist sachlich auf das Material hin und fordert zugleich dazu auf, die vom horizontalen Falz im Blech bewirkte Linie als Meereshorizont zu deuten. Die Veränderung des Betrachtungsstandpunktes führt zu wechselnden Lichtreflexen auf dem gewölbten, blanken Blech, die als unterschiedliche atmosphärische Stimmungen wahrgenommen werden. Für die Betrachtenden wird so aus einem schlichten, abstrakten Objekt an der Wand ein Marinebild ohne Malerei mit dem Sehnsuchtsmotiv des Blicks in die blaue Ferne. Franz Müller beschreibt in diesem Buch - dem 7. Band der Reihe Schlüsselwerke der Schweizer Kunst - die Komplexität hinter der scheinbaren Einfachheit von Markus Raetz' Zeemansblik und zeigt auf, was das Relief zu einem Schlüsselwerk der Schweizer Kunst macht.

Aldo Mozzini. Casematte is the first major book on the work of Swiss artist Aldo Mozzini. Published in conjunction with an exhibition at Museo Casa Rusca in Locarno, Switzerland, it features his energetic art through more than 300 illustrations along with texts by distinguished Swiss curators. A conversation with the artist rounds off the volume, which highlights Mozzini's contribution to the contemporary art scene in Switzerland. Born in Locarno in 1956, Aldo Mozzini has lived and worked in Zurich since the 1980s. Galleries and museums in Switzerland, Italy, and France have shown his works in solo and group exhibitions, and he has won the Swiss Art Award twice, in 2012 and 2019. His oeuvre comprises drawing, painting, objects, photography, sculpture, and installation, moving restlessly from one form of expression to another. The book reviews 40 years of Mozzini's career and explores various aspects of his humorous and poetic art. The impressive body of his paintings and graphic works is closely linked to the sculptures and installations that remain Aldo Mozzini's preferred media.

A landmark illustrated history of rural church monuments - the forgotten national treasures of England and Wales<BR><BR>Deep in the countryside, away from metropolitan abbeys and cathedrals, thousands of funerary monuments are hidden in parish churches. These artworks - medieval brasses and elegant marble effigies, stone tomb chests and grand mausoleums - are of great historical and cultural significance, but have, due to their relative inaccessibility, faded from accounts of our art history.<BR><BR>Over twenty-five years, C. B. Newham FSA has visited and photographed more than eight thousand rural churches, cataloguing the monumental sculptures encountered on his quest. Der Regensburger Bildhauer Guido Martini war in den ersten beiden Dritteln des letzten Jahrhunderts einer der bedeutendsten Bildhauer Ostbayerns. In vielen Kirchen sind noch heute seine Bildwerke vorhanden. In diesem Bildband sind über 300 seiner Werke an mehr als 100 Standorten dokumentiert. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit wurde seiner Zeit als Leiter des Ateliers des Bildhauers Georg Schreiner gewidmet.

"Sokunge/As if ". "Sokunge", is a Shona word that describes phenomena that is intrinsically something else other than their appearance. More like deception or dissimulation of form, concept, or sound. In this exhibition, I was looking at forms that appear as something, but upon a closer look, they reference a lot of other things, more like below the surface politics. That is the relationship between hidden and exposed transcripts, it is the subtext, the micro politics. There's a lot of mingling of symbolism in the work itself and layered aesthetics.

A portrait of a young artist’s formative years studying sculpture in Paris, recounted in her own words.Angela Gregory is considered by many the doyenne of Louisiana sculpture and is a notable twentieth century American sculptor. In A Dream and a Chisel, Angela Gregory and Nancy Penrose explore Gregory’s desire, even as a teenager, to learn the art of cutting stone and to become a sculptor. Through sheer grit and persistence, Gregory achieved her dream of studying with French artist Antoine Bourdelle, one of Auguste Rodin’s most trusted assistants and described by critics of the era as France’s greatest living sculptor. In Bourdelle’s Paris studio, Gregory learned not only sculpting techniques but also how to live life as an artist. Her experiences in Paris inspired a prolific sixty-year career in a field dominated by men.After returning to New Orleans from Paris, Gregory established her own studio in 1928 and began working in earnest. She created bas-relief profiles for the Louisiana State Capitol built in 1932 and sculpted the Bienville Monument, a bronze statue honoring the founder of New Orleans, in the 1950s. Her works also include two other monuments, sculptures incorporated into buildings, portrait busts, medallions, and other forms that appear in museums and public spaces throughout the state. She was the first Louisiana woman sculptor to achieve international recognition, and, at the age of thirty-five, became one of the few women recognized as a fellow of the National Sculpture Society. Gregory’s work appeared in group shows at many prestigious museums and in exhibitions, including the Salon des Tuileries and the Salon d’Automne in Paris, the Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, the National Collection of Fine Arts in the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.This memoir is based on Penrose’s oral history interviews with Gregory, as well as letters and diaries compiled before Gregory’s death in 1990. A Dream and a Chisel demonstrates the importance of mentorships, offers a glimpse into the realities of an artist’s life and studio, and captures the vital early years of an extraordinary woman who carved a place for herself in Louisiana’s history.
