At an elevation of 14115 feet, Pikes Peak is the southernmost of Colorado's famous "Fourteeners." The monolith of rare pink granite juts up out of the Front Range of the Rockies seven miles west of Colorado Springs. A natural "weather maker," its unmatched profile protects the city from prevailing winds, and the crags often seem to reach up to snag the rain or snow-soaked clouds and hold them at bay. Mesmerized by the way the sun played on and over the mountain¿particularly at dawn and dusk¿I quickly fell into a love affair with "America's Mountain." This book is my tribute to Colorado, to Pikes Peak, and to the skies above the Front Range.

The Iron Scar is both a literal journey by a father and son on the longest railway journey in the world, and a metaphoric pilgrimage of not just the author and his adult son, but all of us learning to let go on our way through life.

During America's golden age of railroading, it was the smaller branch lines that were the most beloved by the people they served. Such was the case of Vermont's Woodstock Railroad, which faithfully served the daily needs of the local populace--farmers, mill owners, carpenters and general store proprietors. From 1875 to 1933, the line provided a vital link between the communities of White River Junction, Quechee and Woodstock. Local families such as the Deweys, Billingses and Williamses led the development of the railroad and contributed greatly to the local economy. Local author and historian Frank J. Barrett Jr. recounts the story of that proud line, its construction, daily operations, growth, triumphs and eventual demise.

As a young man, James Aldrich was one of those people who stuck his head out of the figurative foxhole one too many times, even to the point of being deemed too unruly to join the Marines. But even then he was just finding his way toward what would become a philosophy of life based upon the concept of freedom and liberty. As he matured, Aldrich continued his quest for freedom, running for elected office in California, trying his hand at jade mining on the Pacific Coast, falling in love with numerous women, and finally getting a job in Washington, D.C., on President Jimmy Carter's re-election campaign. All along he was plagued by an itch to break free from the restrains of society and to travel around America. Disillusioned by politics and materialistic mores, Aldrich decided to shed his belongings and ride the rails. White House Hobo is the true story of his years criss-crossing America by boxcar, living a life of liberty and love on the rails, in the oilfields, and even at mercenary school. Along the way he formulated a philosophy and way of life that could benefit us all.

Der Autor schildert besondere Erlebnisse, über die man manches Mal schmunzeln kann. In der Kombination "Reiseberichte und Erlebnisse zum Schmunzeln" ist es eine interessante, lesenswerte Urlaubslektüre.

Attended elementary school in Laurel Hollow, New York and middle and high school at Cold Spring Harbor High School from 7th thru 11th grade. Spent senior year and graduated from Hicksville High School in New York. After High School attended two semesters at Nassau Community College in New York. Moved to Raleigh North Carolina for a short period of time before moving to Cape Coral, Florida. While in Cape Coral I attended what was then Edison Community College. Upon graduating with an associate's degree determined to go to the University of South Florida in pursuit of a degree in accounting completed my bachelor's and masters of accountancy at the University of South Florida.While in Tampa, I also was a member of the Beta Alpha Psi accounting fraternity and a member of Big Brother and Big Sisters of Tampa Bay as a volunteer. After completing my degree I went to work for the State of Florida and held office with the State in various locations, Tallahassee, back to Tampa, and Marianna, Florida. While in Tallahassee, I took and passed all 4 parts of the last written CPA examination on the first attempt. I also met my wife Michelle in Tallahassee where we were married on March 17, 2007 at Dorothy B. Oven Park. We lived in Tallahassee together for 2 years before I transferred my job to Tampa. While in Tampa my wife gave birth to a micro preemie on April 18, 2011 and we named her Christa. We lived in Tampa until June of 2014 before we relocated closer to my wife's parents in Graceville. I held a position with the State of Florida at an office in Marianna, Florida. In June 2019 we purchased our first home in Chipley, Florida and Christa is now a beautiful eight year old girl.
