Capturing the vibrancy of the regional economy and the process of 'rurbanization', Sridhar investigates the manner in which local potentates negotiated with captains of colonialism and their native agents. As the region also witnessed the reassertion of caste identities during this period, this book maps the changes in varna perceptions with the aid of previously unexplored sources.

G. Naga Sridhar is a financial journalist and a passionate researcher and teacher of history. He is currently Senior Deputy Editor with the Hindu Group. After obtaining his PhD from the University of Hyderabad, he later taught there as well as at the Central University of Karnataka and at Osmania University. His research interests lie in medieval and modern Indian history, especially social and economic history, the notions of caste and its implications, and business history. He has so far published over a dozen research papers in peer-reviewed journals and has been a speaker at many national and international conferences in India and abroad.
