Einen Computer mit Programmen kann man als System auffassen, das Ordnung schafft oder eine bestehende auf eine höhere Ebene befördert. Dem "ordinateur" im Französischen und "ordenador" im Spanischen (jeweils Ordnungsinstrument) entspricht im Deutschen das Wort "Rechner". Auch wenn Zahlen in digitaler Darstellung die Basis bilden, sind doch Funktionen wie Sortieren, Editieren von Texten, Bearbeiten grafischer Objekte, Suchen oder Aufbau von Strukturen in verschiedensten Erscheinungsformen für viele Computer unverzichtbar. Besonders die Tabelle als vorherrschendes Ordnungsprinzip von Access und Excel dient dazu, betriebliche Elemente und Abläufe überschaubar und steuerbar darzustellen. Hierin liegt das vorrangige Ziel dieses Buches.

Der Taschenrechner ist heute für jeden Ingenieur ein Hand­ werkszeug, das aus der täglichen Praxis nicht mehr wegzu­ denken ist. Er leistet gute Dienste bei allen anfallenden ein­ fachen Berechnungsproblemen, ist jederzeit griffbereit und ohne große Einarbeitung ZU bedienen. Werden Berech­ nungsgänge häufig wiederholt, kann es sich lohnen, für den Taschenrechner ein Programm zu schreiben. Allerdings geht das nicht ohne Einarbeitung. Deshalb bleibt es oft nur bei dem guten Vorsatz, das irgendwann einmal zu machen. Für solche Fälle bietet es sich an, ein Tabellenkalkulations­ programm zu benutzen. Hat man sich mit den sehr einfach zu erlernenden Grundtechniken vertraut gemacht, wird man sehr schnell feststellen, daß ein solches Programm noch viel mehr bietet, als ein sehr gutes, mit viel Aufwand erstelltes Programm für den Taschenrechner. Natürlich ist der PC heute noch nicht überall so verfügbar wie der Taschenrechner, an Ingenieurarbeitsplätzen gehört er aber mehr und mehr ZUr selbstverständlichen Ausrüstung. In nicht allzuferner Zukunft wird PC-Leistung ZU erschwinglichen Preisen in Taschen­ rechnerformat zur Verfügung stehen, so daß auch dieses Problem der Vergangenheit angehören wird.
