This book presents up-to-date information on promising indications for ultrasound in contemporary periodontics and implant therapy with the aim of assisting researchers and dental practitioners to use this novel imaging modality to advance research and patient care. Readers will find clear guidance on the application of ultrasound for evaluation of periodontal and peri-implant tissues. The mechanism of ultrasound imaging is explained in detail and compared to other imaging modalities. Furthermore, the role of ultrasound in the planning and execution of implant surgery and the assessment of implant stability is discussed. The book closes by considering the potential dental applications of functional ultrasound and volumetric ultrasound. This book will potentially be of high values for dental surgeons, periodontists, general dentists, orthodontists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, dental researchers and other practitioners, etc.

There are two major reasons for having this symposium. First, Tohoku Univer­ sity is the place where ultrasound investigations in Japan originated. Starting from the research studies of Professors H. Nukiyama and Y. Kikuchi of To­ hoku University, Professor J. Saneyoshi of Tokyo Institute of Technology, and Dr. K. Kato of Osaka University - all graduates of Tohoku University - the results spread to all parts of Japan. More recently we have had acoustic macro­ scopic studies by researchers like Professor N. Chubachi. As regards tissue char­ acterization, which was the main theme of the symposium, the collaboration among research workers in Japan and the United States started 10 years ago between Professor F. Dunn of the University of Illinois and staff members of Tohoku University and the Tokyo Institute of Technology. So this conference commemorates the lOth anniversary of that joint research effort. The second reason for this conference is that the application of ultrasound has become wide spread and indispensable in the routine clinical activities of medicine. But there have not been many breakthroughs in terms of quantitative and qualitative measurement of the living body tissues. Also, there are many problems with regard to practical application. There are various points that have not been elucidated yet as to the physical and acoustical characteristics of ultrasound itself. The methodology has not in all cases been well established. Therefore, the scientific elucidation of these areas is essential.

The 4th revised edition with 100 new figures and every chapter revised is based on the author's broad experience of 25 years in diagnostic ultrasound. Additionally, four young co-authors enrich the book with their articles on the newest techniques.

It is remarkable that until recently sonographic studies of the bowel have not reached the diagnostic level that sonography has attained for other parts of the gastrointestinal tract. Gas posed the major ob­ stacle to obtaining consistent quality results. Julien Puylaert has de­ veloped a graded-compression technique which is not only able to eliminate gas artifacts, but also - by reducing the distance between the transducer and the bowel - allows the use of high-frequency transducers. Since 1986, when we were barned by his innovative pa­ per on sonographic evaluation of acute appendicitis, he has demon­ strated the eminent diagnostic impact of sonography in right lower quadrant pathology in a great number of publications; his excellent diagnostic results have been confirmed by numerous other authors. I have reflected on the conditions that were the basis for this re­ velatory development in gastrointestinal sonography. The enthusiasm and dedication that Julien Puylaert shows toward diagnostic radiolo­ gy are unsurpassed. This is a family tradition - his father, Professor Carl Puylaert, is a honorary member of the Radiological Society of North America. Furthermore, the younger Dr. Puylaert has the good fortune to work with associates in the Westeinde Hospital who under­ stood at an early point what was going on; they made it possible for him to devote much of his time to his beloved subject. Finally, he has always been convinced that the whole sonographic examination should be performed by the radiologist.

Intravascular ultrasound imaging (IVUS) plays very important roles in clinical cardiology. This book describes the newest advances in vascular ultrasound imaging and the surrounding technologies for high frequency vascular ultrasound imaging. Most important topics of the book are technical applications of IVUS (elasticity imaging, chromaflow...) and the basic data (vibration, acoustic microscopy) that should provide very important information to understand clinical IVUS imaging.
