This book presents the updated results of an investigation carried out in 2019. The National Autonomous University of Mexico's (UNAM) Climate Change Research Program (PINCC), funded the research coordinated by Armelle Gouritin. The research aims to answer the following questions: Does the Mexican legal framework and public policies address forced internal climate mobility? If not, what could be the elements of a legal framework and public policies to address the phenomenon? As the phenomenon was approached it was clear that it was extremely complex and consisted of numerous tensions that would lead to other questions throughout the research process.Climate forced internal displacement is projected as a huge-scale phenomenon in Mexico. Against this background, the book provides the first critical diagnosis of the current politico-legal Mexican framework and finds it to be lagging behind in terms of prevention and attention. The book analyses the three-level Mexican governance(federal, state and local levels), and identifies serious loopholes according to a rights-based approach that particularly focuses on women, indigenous peoples, and persons and communities with scarce economic resources. The results provide information on up-coming legislative and political processes and provide benchmarks that can be applied in other case-studies, including other national frameworks' critical analysis.

This book is a history of severe weather in the snowbelt regions to the lee of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario in New York State from 1798 to 2022. It contains the history of weather observation in the region and the chronology and analysis of major weather events.

The Bay of Bengal is prone to tropical cyclones and storm surges as a result of its location, and many of the mostly poor people living along the coastal regions of South Asia lose their lives almost every year. These disasters have been particularly devastating and have caused serious damage. During the past five decades, the low-lying coastal and offshore islands have experienced a tragic history of 50 severe cyclones and storm surges, with more than one million victims dead or missing. People accepted and waited for the next disaster as they had no alternatives. Members of the poor families who survived the disasters experienced hard times recovering from damage and the loss of their loved ones. After disasters, epidemic diseases arise in the affected areas. Many of the people in distress are also deprived of public services. Providing all sorts of assistance and emergency health preparedness are most essential to overcome such a situation. The causes of these huge casualties have been mainly: (1) the high population density of costal settlements, (2) inadequate cyclone shelters in the disaster risk areas, (3) lack of awareness of the disaster risk by the vulnerable population, (4) deterministic attitudes of people who accept disasters as "fate", (5) houses that are weakly constructed and (6) underdeveloped central awareness programmes and weather forecast systems. This book is based on an empirical study presenting a timeline analysis of major cyclones and their impacts and consequent losses through the super-cyclones in the disaster-prone coastal regions of India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. This study also investigates resilience mechanisms based on early warning systems, technology applications including GIS and remote sensing, best practices, success stories and case studies that can be used for effective cyclone management and development of a resilience mechanism among coastal communities.

This book discusses the impact of climate change, land use and land cover, and socio-economic dynamics on landslides in Asian countries. Scholars recently have brought about a shift in their focus regarding triggering factors for landslides, from rainfall or earthquake to claiming rapid urbanization, extreme population pressure, improper land use planning, illegal hill cutting for settlements and indiscriminate deforestation. This suggests that the occurrence or probabilities of landslides are shaped by both climate-related and non-climate-related anthropogenic factors. Among these issues, land use and land cover change or improper land use planning is one of the key factors. Further climate change shapes the rainfall pattern and intensity in different parts of the world, and consequently rainfall-triggered landslides have increased. These changes cause socio-economic changes. Conversely, socio-economic and lifestyle changes enhance inappropriate land use and climate change. All these changes in land use, climate and socio-economic aspects are dynamics in nature and shape landslide risks in Asian countries, where they are given serious attention by governments, disaster management professionals, researchers and academicians.This book comprises 21 chapters divided into three major sections highlighting the effect of climate change on landslide incidence with the influence on vegetation and socio-economic aspects. The sections address how climate change and extreme events have triggered landslides. The advances in geospatial techniques with the focus on land use and land cover change along with the effect on socio-economic aspects are also explored.

Die Klima-Ereignisse sind in den wenigen Monaten, die seit der 1. Auflage vergangenen sind, heftig in Bewegung geraten. Der Autor, der seit Jahren die Irrungen und Wirrungen in der Klimadebatte kritisch beobachtet, sah sich daher zu einer 2. Auflage seiner Broschüre veranlasst. Eingangs beschreibt er die extremen Folgen der Erderwärmung, die einige Regionen der Welt, aber auch Teile Europas in der letzten Zeit heimgesucht haben. Er verweist aber auch auf die vielen Mängel, die in den wissenschaftlichen Modellen die Beurteilung der Folgen erschweren. In einem weiteren Abschnitt befasst sich der Autor mit der völlig verfehlten Klimapolitik der Bundesregierung, die seit ihrer Bildung im Dezember 2021 mit viel Geld, immer neuen Programmen und immer kürzeren Fristen glaubt, die Welt vor dem Wärmetod retten zu können. Die ständig neuen aufgelegten Projekte zur CO2-Einsparung verpuffen angesichts unseres vergleichsweise unbedeutenden CO2-Ausstosses so gut wie wirkungslos. Die Bereiche Fracking, LNG, E-Fuel und Wasserstoff sind Ausdruck dieses Strebens nach klimapolitischer Perfektion, von Weltrettungsfantasien und der Durchsetzung parteipolitischer Ideale. Rolf Wenzel mahnt daneben eindringlich den dringenden Ausbau des deutschen Strom- und Fernwärmenetzes und die Notwendigkeit zu einer Digitalisierung unserer Ablesesystem (¿Smart Meter¿) an. Hinzu kommt der Zwang zum Energiesparen, zur Erschließung neuer Energiequellen und zu einer Reduzierung der ausufernden Energiekosten. Diese Aufgaben haben zwar wenig mit dem Klimawandel zu tun, aber viel mit einer Modernisierung unserer Lebensgrundlagen. Auf diesen Gebieten sind uns andere Länder zum Teil weit voraus. Nach seiner sorgfältig begründeten Meinung wäre es sehr viel sinnvoller, die vielen Milliarden in die oben genannten Bereiche und in die vielen weiteren Investitionslücken zu lenken, Es ist für die Regierenden offenbar schwer zu verstehen, dass es dem globalen und regionalen Klima egal ist, was die kleine BRD unternimmt. Zur besseren Orientierung wurde ein umfassendes Stichwortverzeichnis angehängt.

This book is composed of eight chapters, introducing the authors' research and application achievements in the hazard-causing system and disaster evaluation of water and mud inrush in tunnels over the past 10 years. Through a large number of case studies and analysis, and on the basis of existing research, this book puts forward 3 categories and 11 types of tunnel water and mud inrush hazard-causing systems and 4 typical water and mud inrush disaster-forming modes. The authors carefully study the typical cases of tunnel water and mud inrush hazard-causing system, discuss the types of karst water system, structural characteristics, macro-geological identification, engineering identification, karst tunnel route selection principles and evaluation methods in detail, and then develop a dynamic evaluation method of tunnel water and mud inrush construction risk interval and an evaluation method for the resistance body. This book assesses the vulnerability impacts of climate change on food security by examining a 50 years scenario (2015- 2065) and following a top-down approach. Importantly, looking at the sustainable food production, the authors compared the cost-benefit of adaptation costs from 2015 to 2065. It was found that a 15% adaptation capacity is more efficient for Malaysia in order to combat the climate change effects on the food sector. This book has developed a quantitative adaptive model namely, the Malaysian Climate and Economy (MCE) model, based on the dynamic Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) modeling structure to examine food sustainability and adaptation strategies. Malaysia experiences an unusual combination of droughts and extreme rainfall events that can be attributed to climate change. These unusual events and consequences leave Malaysian policymakers looking for ways to make Malaysia self-sufficient in terms of agriculture. It is assumed that climate change effects may result in increasing food insecurity and vulnerability in the future. Policy measures are in place to lessen the likely climatic effects overall, but there is an urgent need to develop an adaptation policy for the future.
