Ausgehend von einem Symposium thematisiert der Band in verschiedenen Beiträgen das in seiner langen Historie vielfältige Verhältnis von Musik und Figurentheater. Einerseits steht die Aufführung von Oper mit Puppen im 18. Jahrhundert sowie musikalisiertes Figurentheater in der Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts im Fokus, andererseits nimmt der Band die Integration von Figurenthematik in Sujet, Ästhetik und Inszenierung von Oper mit realen Sängerinnen und Sängern in den Blick. Ergänzt wird dieser Fokus durch einen historischen Rundgang zum Verhältnis von Puppen und Musik sowie durch einen Blick auf die Institutionalisierung von Puppenspiel in internationalen Organisationen am Beispiel der UNIMA und der UNESCO.

Jahrhunderts gesehen1, vor allem bekannt durch den namhaften Darsteller des Kasperls Johann Laroche (1744 - 1806) in der Alt-Wiener Stegreifkomödie. Auch dadurch, dass die Maske mit der Hans-Wurst-Maske teilweise konkurrierte und ihn gar beerbte, machte die Maske des Kaspers bekannt. Ins allgemeine Gedächtnis hat es allerdings die Kasper-Maske als Figur im deutschen Handpuppenspiel geschafft. So wird das deutsche Handpuppenspiel auch "Kasper"- oder "Kasperle" Theater genannt. Damit wird deutlich, dass der Kasper die Hauptfigur und bekannteste Figur im deutschen Handpuppenspiel ist.In dem Referat soll näher auf die Figur des Handpuppenkaspers und der Abgrenzung zum Kasper der Schauspielbühne eingegangen werden. Außerdem soll die Sprache des Kaspers analysiert werden. Auch soll auf die geschichtliche Umstrukturierung des Handpuppenkaspers unter Pocci und Schmidt eingegangen, so wie das Stück "Kasper tot. Schluss mit lustig" unter der Betrachtung aktueller Forschungsfragen betrachtet werden.Folgende Fragen in Bezug auf die Kasper-Forschung stehen im Mittelpunkt: Tritt beim Kasper der Handpuppenbühne die Sprachkomik in den Vordergrund? Wie steht der Kasper zum Harlekin-Prinzip?

This volume is based on papers given at the biennial Women in French conference held in Leeds in May 2011. Drawing on a range of interconnecting disciplines and forms of cultural production, it explores the relationship between French and Francophone women and the material world. Bringing together researchers from the United Kingdom, France and other Francophone countries, the book reflects the engagement of women researchers with contemporary debates. The first section focuses on the female body, examining dance and the performing arts but also the material objectification suffered by rape victims in France. The next highlights the contradictions of the im/materiality of the body, the act of writing and the text, in terms of dichotomies, permeable identities and fluid boundaries. The third section turns its attention to the practicalities of 'the material' in relation to women's engagement with the economy - the gendering of domestic work, women's discourse, the precariousness of women's employment and the alienating impersonality of consumer spaces. The concluding section considers the relationship of the female body to the material object, whether subverting, co-opting or indeed absorbing it. In the final chapters of the book the tactile and the visual converge in explorations of 'the material' in cinematic representations of the female body.

Stuart Blackburn takes the reader inside a little-known form of shadow puppetry in this captivating work about performing the Tamil version of the Ramayana epic. Blackburn describes the skill and physical stamina of the puppeteers in Kerala state in South India as they perform all night for as many as ten weeks during the festival season. The fact that these performances often take place without an audience forms the starting point for Blackburn's discussion--one which explores not only this important epic tale and its performance, but also the broader theoretical issues of text, interpretation, and audience.Blackburn demonstrates how the performers adapt the narrative and add their own commentary to re-create the story from a folk perspective. At a time when the Rama story is used to mobilize political movements in India, the puppeteers' elaborate recitation and commentary presents this controversial tale from another ethical perspective, one that advocates moral reciprocity and balance.While the study of folk narrative has until now focused on tales, tellers, and tellings, this work explores the importance of audience--absent or otherwise. Blackburn's elegant translations of the most dramatic and pivotal sequences of the story enhance our appreciation of this unique example of performance art.
