art commerce
Over a period of eight years, Steve Riskind photographed four small businesses located in or near Paterson, New Jersey. These "artisan businesses" are small, rely on skilled crafts people, and all are family owned. They are a specialty textile firm, jewelry manufacturer, pipe organ builder and stained glass studio. Each chapter focuses on one of these businesses. Introductions to the chapters are based largely on Riskind's interviews with owners of the firms. In some cases additional research supplements the interviews.Following each introductory essay are approximately 20 photographs taken at the business. The goal in taking the photographs was to capture the intensity of workers engaging with the materials they use. These are not posed pictures showing workers holding products and smiling at the camera. Rather they are images of skilled artisans in the process of creation.

America Recovered
America Recovered reveals the point where abstract political processes manifest themselves in the physical world, thus providing an alternate means of experiencing the contemporary American landscape. Collectively, the images and essays show what aspects of our everyday lives are being assigned value in the promise of a recovered America.

America Recovered collects forty images that mark one of the only efforts to document the breadth of projects funded by the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Unlike the New Deal and other programs designed for employment and infrastructural development, the Recovery Act was passed without any funds dedicated for photographic documentation. Using an official government website as his guide, Chad Ress took photographs of projects across the country. The publication of America Recovered at this moment allows for a critical reassessment of the Act and its lasting impact on the American landscape.

The two essays by architectural writer Jordan H. Carver and photography historian Miriam Paeslack situate Ress's photographs within broader discourses of urbanism, infrastructure, and politics. The question of what role the government should play in everyday life remains one of the touchstone issues in American politics. The photographs and essays ask a different set of questions, not whether government spending is good or bad, whether it worked or didn't, but what, exactly does government spending look like. And importantly, America Recovered asks how government spending and civic identity are constructed around place.
Abandoned Kansas City: Beauty in the Forgotten
Kansas City's abandoned schools and businesses tell stories of growth, decay, and urban exploration. The crossroad of the Midwest, Kansas City has grown from a small town to the large metropolis that it is today. As infrastructure has done nothing but expand, some businesses, schools, and even homes have been left for larger and sometimes newer locations that can accommodate the increasing population and the demand of today's consumer. New schools are built, and businesses move on, but what happens to these structures after they have served their purpose? For many of us, known as urban explorers, these buildings still have a story to share. Despite the risks and dangers of structural integrity and law enforcement, urban explorers still pursue the history left in their remnants. These photos show the stories of schools that now sit as reminders of days gone by, and of business that once brought in happy customers only to face permanent closure. This book is an altruistic reality of how expansion pushes these buildings into obscurity and decay.

Burlington Brewing
Burlington has welcomed local farms, breweries and distilleries with open arms. The Queen City fosters a unique culture around beer and farm-to-table cuisine. Daniel Standiford established the city's first brewery in 1880. Prohibition ushered in a dry era that remained for more than a century until Greg and Nancy Noonan fought the law and established Vermont Pub & Brewery in the late 1980s. Since then, breweries have popped up, from nationally recognized Magic Hat down to the city's first blendery, House of Fermentology. Authors Adam Krakowski and Jeff S. Baker II explore Burlington's sudsy history from early newspaper clippings to modern-day tastemakers, along with some delicious recipes.
