'Seeing' beyond seeingIn photography, mindfulness is like observing something for the first time, even though you may have looked at it a thousand times before and it involves a deep kind of knowing.As experienced photographers, we often create images that are technically "correct" and "well" composed but are still missing some intangible aesthetic that we experienced at the moment of creation. Mindful photography infers that while technical proficiency, and an eye for composition are necessary skills, they are not always sufficient to capture the essence of our experience, and therefore emphasizes the importance of training our minds to use all of your senses in order to experience the world differently; to see awe and wonder in what we normally think of as "ordinary."Mindful photography is an art and rests on the photographer's skill and ability to self-efface and focus on the subject/object, thereby providing an authentic visualisation of the image. From the age of 10, he worked odd jobs to help keep the family fed.<BR>At 17, in his senior year of high school, his mother re-married and moved away. William found himself homeless and living in his car, but still managed to finish high school. After graduation, he joined the US Air Force. Military service brought William to fields of combat and special operations duties in foreign lands around the world. His distinguished military service earned him many medals, including the Distinguished Flying Cross. But William says he would give all the medals away to be able to close his eyes and not see any of it.<BR>William's work has always been an outlet, if not for his own healing, but to help heal others. Through his stories. Through his paintings. Through his photography. For the past thirty years, his wife has been there with him, assisting, which is why William says this is as much her book as it is his.

Rock Songs starts as a walk of a few miles between the valley of the river Tywi/Towy and the heights of Y Mynydd Du/Black Mountain in Wales. It takes millions of years, meeting along the way the rocks and water that have formed the land, together with the trees, red kites, and otters who pass through. Humans crowd in as well--saints, drovers, Romans, bikers, and tourists. The great zen monk, Dogen, is also walking and learns that mountains themselves walk, if you know how to look. Rock Songs began as a one-man movement performance of a river by Nick Sales and has become a book of poetry, reflection, ecology, and zen reflection. It's illustrated with extensive photography by Steve Hopkins and beautifully designed by Christopher Binding.
