Die neu geschaffene Poetikdozentur für NEUE DEUTSCHE LITERATUR zeichnet Autor*innen aus, die in ihrem Schreiben die Realitäten einer postmigrantischen Gesellschaft beschreiben - nicht mehr und nicht weniger. Sie versteht sich damit als Beitrag zu einer Gesellschaft der Vielen jenseits identitätspolitischer Debatten.Lena Gorelik war im Wintersemester 2022/23 als erste Poetikdozentin im Literaturhaus Hannover und an der Leibniz-Universität zu Gast. Ihre Texte sind ästhetisch komplexer Ausdruck einer Literatur, die nicht allein die Aufmerksamkeit für eine postmigrantische Wirklichkeit in Deutschland einfordert, sondern ebendiese in all ihrer Ambivalenz thematisiert.Ihre Antrittsvorlesung beginnt Lena Gorelik mit den Worten 'Ich schreibe, weil ich, glaube ich, bin.' Post-Blackness. Post-Soul. Post-Black Art. New Blackness. How has the meaning of blackness changed in the twenty-first century? Cameron Leader-Picone suggests that this proliferation of terms, along with the renewed focus on questioning the relationship between individual black artists and the larger black community, indicates the arrival of novel forms of black identity and black art.Leader-Picone defines these terms as significant facets of a larger post era, linking them with the social and political context of Barack Obama's presidency. Analyzing claims of progress associated with Obama's election and post-era thinking, He examines the contours of black aesthetics in the new century.To do so, he sifts through post-era African American fiction, considering both celebrations and rejections of an early twenty-first-century rhetoric of progress. As well, he maps the subsequent implications of these concepts for rearticulating racial identities. Through the works of Colson Whitehead, Alice Randall, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Paul Beatty, Kiese Laymon, and Jesmyn Ward, Leader-Picone tracks how recent fiction manifests the tension between the embrace of post-civil rights era gains and the recognition of persistent structural racism.Ultimately far less triumphal than the prefix post would imply, these authors address the Black Arts Movement and revise double consciousness and other key themes from the African American literary tradition. The Wallace Effect explores David Foster Wallace's contested space at the forefront of 21st-century American fiction. Pioneering Wallace scholar Marshall Boswell does this by illuminating "The Wallace Effect"-the aura of literary competition that Wallace routinely summoned in his fiction and non-fiction and that continues to inform the reception of his work by his contemporaries. <BR><BR>A frankly combative writer, Wallace openly challenged his artistic predecessors as he sought to establish himself as the leading literary figure of the post-postmodern turn. Boswell challenges this portrait in two ways. First, he examines novels by Wallace's literary patriarchs and contemporaries that introduce innovations on traditional metafiction that Wallace would later claim as his own. Second, he explores four novels published after Wallace's ascendency that attempt to demythologize Wallace's persona and his literary preeminence. <BR><BR>By re-situating Wallace's work in a broader and more contentious literary arena, The Wallace Effect traces both the reach and the limits of Wallace's legacy.

From the famous Complexity of novels such as Infinite Jest to the direct critique of American culture in his essays, his works have at their core basic themes, such as self-understanding, connecting with others, ethical behavior, and finding meaning. The essays in this volume suggest ways to elucidate Wallace's philosophical and literary preoccupations as students continue to contend with urgent issues, both personal and political, through reading literature.Part 1, "Materials," offers guidance on editions of Wallace's works and critical responses to them.
