WINNER OF THE NOBEL PRIZE FOR LITERATUREJosé Saramago's mesmerizing, classic narrative about the loneliness of individual lives and the universal need for human connection.Senhor José is a low-grade clerk in the city's Central Registry, where the living and the dead share the same shelf space. A middle-aged bachelor, he has no interest in anything beyond the certificates of birth, marriage, divorce, and death that are his daily routine. But one day, when he comes across the records of an anonymous young woman, something happens to him. Obsessed, Senhor José sets off to follow the thread that may lead him to the woman—but as he gets closer, he discovers more about her, and about himself, than he would ever have wished. The loneliness of people's lives, the effects of chance, the discovery of love—all coalesce in this extraordinary novel that displays the power and art of José Saramago in brilliant form.

Mendacity Quirk Slipstream Snafu
Mendacity Quirk Slipstream Snafu is a collection of 100 twenties, a form and mode of poetry created by Jackson Mac Low in 1989. Five stanzas of four lines each, these poems were composed spontaneously with a free-associational approach in a meditative state of mind. Utilizing little in the way of connective tissue, the poems leave a great deal of room for interpretation so that the reader is more an active participant in creating meaning from the text rather than merely being led along by the poet.

SENTENCES SANS QUEUE NI TÊTE
"Tousser des nuages sous une pergola en feu peut faire rire violet." "Au paradis, la peur du moustique n'exclut pas l'équidistance des rivières de marbre." Between My Thoughts
Between My Thoughts is Betty Kituyi's début poetry collection in the UK. Her poems are raw, filled with emotion and written with vulnerability. Kituyi's writing style is surrealist at heart: a sense of the poem remains, yet something about it evades all rational thought.

Elizabeth Bishop
A new reading of Elizabeth Bishop's work ranging across archival, historical and theoretical materialsLinda Anderson explores Elizabeth Bishop's poetry, from her early days at Vassar College to her last great poems in Geography III and the later uncollected poems. Drawing generously on Bishop's notebooks and letters, the book situates Bishop both in her historical and cultural context and in terms of her own writing process, where the years between beginning a poem and completing it, for which Bishop is legendary, are seen as a necessary part of their composition. The book begins by offering a new reading of Bishop's relationship with Marianne Moore and with modernism. Through her journeys to Europe Bishop, it is also argued, learned a great deal from visual artists and from surrealism. However the book also follows the way Bishop came back to memories of her childhood, developing ideas about narrative, in order to explore time, both the losses it demands and the connections it makes possible. The lines of connections are both those between Bishop and her contemporaries and her context and those she inscribed through her own work, suggesting how her poems incorporate a process of arrival and create new possibilities of meaning.Key Features- Draws on archival and historical material- Provides readings of Bishop's major poetry and prose in context- Draws on psychoanalytic and poststructuralist theory- Connects the poems with their process of composition
