Love and Marriage in the Age of Jane Austen
What happened when Jane Austen’s heroines and heroes were finally wed?

Marriage is at the centre of Jane Austen’s novels. The pursuit of husbands and wives, advantageous matches, and, of course, love itself, motivate her characters and continue to fascinate readers today. But what were love and marriage like in reality for ladies and gentlemen in Regency England?

Rory Muir uncovers the excitements and disappointments of courtship and the pains and pleasures of marriage, drawing on fascinating first-hand accounts as well as novels of the period. From the glamour of the ballroom to the pressures of careers, children, managing money, and difficult in-laws, love and marriage came in many guises: some wed happily, some dared to elope, and other relationships ended with acrimony, adultery, domestic abuse, or divorce. Muir illuminates the position of both men and women in marriage, as well as those spinsters and bachelors who chose not to marry at all.

This is a richly textured account of how love and marriage felt for people at the time—revealing their unspoken assumptions, fears, pleasures, and delights.

Hated Because of the Anointing
If you're reading this book, I want you to know that you're better than that, and it doesn't matter if you've been told otherwise. As I have gotten closer to the Lord, I have learned that words make up stories, stories make up chapters in our lives, and chapters make up books. Get up woman of God and write the book. Some of us even have volumes that have gone untouched, but it is time to tell your story and save someone's life and destiny. My prayer today is that my story can help change your life, bring healing to a broken vessel, and wholeness to God's daughters. Now I do know that there are plenty of men out there that are caught up in domestic violence situations and may even be stuck there and have no idea how to break away. I understand but I'm speaking to the women now. It is my calling to help broken women, and so I command today that the chains of bondage be broken off your life today daughter and that you be set free and made whole in Jesus' name! All I can say to the man right now is get out and get out NOW!

Catharine Sedgwick, Redwood: A Tale
Redwood follows Ellen Bruce as she enters adulthood, navigating the clashing social currents of pious New England farmers, southern belles from South Carolina, slave-owning atheists from Virginia, and sophisticated Philadelphia socialites on her journey to discover the secret of her parentage and craft her own identity as a strong American woman. The novel's embedded slave narrative provides a powerful early prototype for later anti-slavery fiction. Ellen's formidable mentor, Debby Lenox, a single woman who stands over six feet tall and makes her own rules about what constitutes respectable behaviour for women, is remarkably refreshing and original almost two centuries after Sedgwick crafted her. This new edition includes a historically and theoretically informed critical introduction that situates the novel within American social and literary history, also featuring a bibliography for further research and appendices detailing the significant differences between the two nineteenth-century editions.

Rosa Mulholland (1841-1921)
This new work sets six important texts (two full texts and four novel extracts) in the context of Rosa Mulholland's writing career, and the cultural context of the time. Mullholland's writing reflects a creative tension between issues of class, gender, religion, land politics, the presentation of the Irish peasantry, Irishness and Victorianism.Rosa Mulholland was an important figure in late nineteenth-century Irish fiction writing. She was the author of dozens of novels, short stories and critical pieces. She came from a Catholic, upper middle class family, married a prominent historian and through her sister was related to the Russell family. Their most prominent members were Matthew Russell JS, editor of the Irish Monthly, and Lord Russell of Killowen, Lord Chief Justice of England. The book is organised in such a way as to give a representative selection of Mulholland's writings in terms of genre (short story, novel extract, essay), theme (famine; middle-class women's aspirations; religion; feminism and the land war; women and ethical decision making; gender and economics; publishing and patriotism) and chronology (1864 to 1908).Interest in Mulholland has been greatly aided by the recovery in feminist literary criticism. She is now regarded as an important figure and this work provides an introductory access to her work to students and scholars.

Reconstructing Mabel
High in the mountains of New Mexico, Taos has long been a magnet for artists. When writer Valmai Howe Elkins, escaping brutal east coast winters, buys a tiny house without even seeing inside, lured by the way the light shimmers between the branches of an old apple tree, she is intrigued by the startling adobe house at the top of the lane. "That’s the Mabel Dodge Luhan House," the realtor tells her. "Mabel was a wealthy socialite who became a patron of the arts. She married Tony Luhan from the Pueblo and they built that house. She was the person who invited Georgia O’Keeffe to the American Southwest." Mabel, born in 1879, turned her back on a glittering life in Florence, Italy and New York to savor the simple pleasures of Taos and her people. Inspired by Mabel’s book, Winter in Taos, together with the extraordinary house and its view across the sage plains to the Sacred Mountain, Elkins regains her health, makes friends and plunges into Taos adventures. The book is an invitation to readers to explore the lives of rebellious women. The author experiences the power of place and a quirky house which continues to create its own magical world.
