Paralleljustiz, Antidiskriminierungsgesetze, Rechtstransfer - das Thema 'Recht und Diversität' verbindet unterschiedlichste aktuelle Diskussionen und erweist sich als zentral für den gesellschaftlichen Umgang mit Differenz und Gleichheit. Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes - aus der Geschichts- und Rechtswissenschaft sowie den Jüdischen Studien - rücken dieses Thema in eine historische Perspektive und nehmen Konstellationen und Umgangsweisen mit Rechtsvielfalt von der Frühen Neuzeit bis in die Gegenwart in den Blick. Beleuchtet werden Situationen des Kulturkontakts und des interreligiösen Zusammenlebens sowie global agierende Akteur*innen und Organisationen in Europa, Asien, den Amerikas und Afrika.

Sprach- und Nationsentwürfe in der Habsburgermonarchie, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Mit dem Begriff des "Illyrismus" werden gleichermaßen die nationale Wiedergeburt Kroatiens in der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts und die daraus entstandene Idee der kulturellen und politischen Vereinigung aller südslawischen Völker bezeichnet. Man könnte die Vollendung daher leicht im von 1918-2003 in unterschiedlicher Ausformung bestehenden Staate Jugoslawien vermuten. So bezeichnete aber der durch seine weitreichende publizistische Tätigkeit als Initiator der Bewegung geltende Ljudevit Gaj gar ein Gebiet als "Großes Illyrien", dessen drei von ihm genannte Eckpunkte Skutari (heute Shkodra), Varna und Villach alle außerhalb des späteren Jugoslawiens liegen; Villach im Norden im österreichischen Teil Kärntens, Shkodra im Süden in Albanien und Varna im Osten am Schwarzen Meer in Bulgarien. Alle drei Gebiete werden auch von Bogoslav ¿ulek in seiner Schrift "Was haben die Illyrier vor?", in der er 1844 alle grundlegenden Fragen zur Ideologie der Illyristen beantwortete, dem illyrischen Raum zugeschlagen, auch wenn die Bewegung dort nie einen entsprechenden Resonanzraum finden konnte. Der Illyrismus blieb stark auf die Gebiete, die heute den modernen kroatischen Staat bilden, fokussiert, während beim später entstandenen Jugoslawismus die serbische Komponente dominierte.

This issue of zeitgeschichte off ers a comprehensive survey of aspects of Yugoslav foreign policy during Cold War détente. Due to its geostrategic location on the Balkan peninsula, Yugoslavia became an important focus for the U.S.S.R. and the United States during the East-West confl ict. After the break with Stalin in 1948, the Yugoslav "leader" Tito sought to position Yugoslavia as a non-aligned state on the international level and played a hegemonic role in the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). The articles analyze Yugoslav policy in the 1960s and 1970s, examining its intentions, its developments, its strategic advantages, and its limits in the context of (geo-)political, economic, and cultural circumstances, with a focus on non-alignment as a leitmotiv of Yugoslav political ambitions, political and economic relations between Yugoslavia and countries of the NAM, the role of the Balkans in U.S. Cold War policy, and aspects of Yugoslav labor migration.

In Researching Yugoslavia and its Aftermath, a common thread is the authors' path through the time and space context in which fieldwork has taken place. Accordingly, this collection tackles problems that have always existed but have not been dealt with in a single volume. In particular, it examines a range of methodological questions arising from the contributors' shared concerns, and thus the obstacles and solutions characterising the relationship between researchers and their objects of study. Being an interdisciplinary project, this book brings together highly regarded historians, sociologists, anthropologists, political scientists, cultural and social theorists, as well as experts in architecture and communication studies. They share a belief that the awareness of the researcher's own position in fieldwork is a precondition of utmost significance to comprehend the evolution of objects of study, and hence to ensure transparency and ultimate credibility of the findings. Moreover, the contributors come from diverse backgrounds, including authors from the former Yugoslavia and others who have made their way to the region after starting their research careers; some from universities in the area, others from institutions in the Global North. Here, they explore cross-cutting issues such as the repercussions of gender, nationality, institutional affiliation and the consequences of their entry into the field. This is examined in terms of the results of the research and the ethical aspect of the relationship with the object of study, as well as the implications of the chosen time framework in the methodological design and the clash between this decision and the interests of the actors studied.

For decades, we have come to accept that nationalism formed the basis of the modern history of the Balkans. In this bold and controversial study, Pavlos Hatzopoulos turns this assumption on its head. <BR><BR>Through a ground-breaking examination of the non-nationalist ideologies in the Balkans during the interwar period, Hatzopoulos calls into question the supposedly inherent connection between the Balkans and nationalism and argues that nationalism does not form the sole ordering principle of the modern history of the Balkan region. Focusing on the ideologies of communism, liberal internationalism and agrarianism, Hatzopoulos examines how these interact with nationalist ideology. He demonstrates how non-nationalist theories challenge the nationalist view of the Balkans as the sum of several national spaces. He even questions the nationalist understanding of the very term 'the Balkans'. <BR><BR>The Balkans Beyond Nationalism and Identity revisits contemporary debates on a region that is still a European crisis point and challenges the nation-centric understanding that permeates it. In proposing a description of 'the Balkans' as a contested political concept, the book argues for a completely fresh interpretation of the region's composition.

Zwischen dem 18. und 20. Jahrhundert lebten im heutigen Staatsgebiet Kroatiens zahlreiche deutsche Emigranten. Zwischen ihnen und der kroatischen Mehrheitsbevölkerung fanden z.T. intensive kulturelle Austauschprozesse statt. Im zweiten Band zu dem vom DAAD geförderten internationalen Forschungsprojekt werden Ergebnisse zur Erforschung einzelner Aspekte des regionalen deutschsprachigen Presse-, Theater- und Schulwesens vorgelegt. In einzelnen Beiträgen aus diesem Band wird auf den regen Kontakt zwischen deutscher und kroatischer Sprache und Kultur im Bereich des landwirtschaftlichen Wortschatzes, der gymnasialen Schulordnung, aber auch der Philosophie, Literatur und Theaterpoetik sowie Theaterkritik hingewiesen.
