Overland To Cairo By Any Means
On January 17th, 1982 I received an urgent telegram from my brother, who was a teacher trainer for Canadian University Services Overseas (CUSO) in northern Nigeria."I don't know what the chances are of us meeting in Kenya, but it sure would be fun!"Little did I know how these words would impact my life. This was pre-Internet and telegrams were one of the few ways to communicate with people half way around the world. On a whim, I flew halfway around the world to meet up with my brother and girlfriend for an Easter holiday safari in Kenya. My brother's words set me off on my great African adventure, which later culminated in four overland trips and eventually residing in Nairobi.Like any evolving continent, there are always changes taking place, much like there are today. Africa in the 1980s was quite different: Uganda was recovering from the tyranny of Idi Amin and a no-go; travelling was forbidden and non-existent in Marxist Ethiopia, Tanzania had closed its border with Kenya, and Sudan was ruled by western-friendly President Nimieri. This book is about overland travel at its best and worst, but by any means possible: beaten-up overland trucks, buses, on an overcrowded Nile barge, by foot, by train, or by crowded, shared taxis.Travelling is not about your final destination, but about the people and different cultures you meet along the way. No one ever said that overland travel in Africa is easy, but if you want to see Africa, it might just be one of the ways. In the 1980s, it was the only way.

Triumphs & Tragedies in Serving God
"Triumphs & Tragedies in Serving God" is unique in multiple ways. First, it is comprised of only true stories with no embellishments. It is written by an OB/GYN Surgeon. The various stories can be at times tear-jerking, exciting, or humorous, but are all memorable. The author shares her experiences in an entertaining and understandable format while still providing thought-provoking scenarios and issues. Many, but not all, stories provide a little known birds-eye view of what actually happens in an operating room. Her goal is to challenge and inspire everyone who reads this book to become acutely aware that ALL can be used by God in His Service even despite severe limitations. Everybody can experience His Blessings in the triumphs and His Grace through the tragedies of Christian Service - if we are only willing. You will feel like you are right beside Dr. Joy in the swift moving easy-to-read true stories. Joy Diane Shields-Miller, MD grew up in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in the little town of Jackson, Ohio. She majored in foreign missions at Circleville Bible College (now Ohio Christian University) for two years before transferring to the Ohio State University (OSU). At OSU, she earned a Bachelor's Degree in chemistry to fulfil pre-med requirements. In 1986, Joy attended the Medical College of Ohio (now Medical University of Ohio) in Toledo. She graduated with a Medical Doctor degree and began a Family Practice residency at Mercy Hospital, in Toledo's inner city. When a second year residency position became available in OB/GYN at Providence Hospital, Southfield, MI, she accepted. Following graduation from that program, she joined Dr. Ed Ricaurte in private practice in Oregon, Ohio. In 1997, she interviewed at Berger Hospital (now Ohio Health Berger), and became the first OB/GYN to open their new maternity ward. She has had extensive training in several medical/surgical fields including OB/GYN, vein surgery, and chronic wound care. Since 2015 until her retirement on January 4, 2021, she was Medical Director of the Wound Care and Hyperbaric Oxygen Center at the hospital. She currently loves horseback riding, playing softball with her family, cooking, and spending time with grandchildren. Both she and her husband, Dr. David Miller, a Christian Psychologist, live in Circleville, Ohio and are active members of Hedges Chapel, Churches of Christ in Christian Union.

Finding Home
Sir Michael McWilliam was born on a tea estate in Kenya in the 1930s. After education at Cheltenham and Oxford he returned to Africa, first to the Northern Rhodesia Copperbelt and then to the Kenya Treasury and he recounts some of the events and atmosphere of that vanished pre-independence world. In his subsequent banking career, he rose to be chief executive of Standard Chartered Bank as it adapted to changes in the developing countries of Africa and Asia and also in the City, and he reflects on the transforming impact of Big Bang in 1985. On leaving the City he was appointed Director of the School of Oriental & African Studies, again at a time of wrenching change in the university sector, and was appointed KCMG upon retirement in 1996. The Commonwealth has been a lifelong interest from Oxford days and this was reflected in roles with several Commonwealth institutions. The pressures of a demanding career had domestic repercussions and there follows a candid reflection this had on his marriage. Displacement from one's roots and the search for home has been a common experience of many in modern times, and the memoir concludes on a note of contentment on reaching safe haven in Gloucestershire.

I Dreamed of Africa
'Often, at the hour of day when the savannah grass is streaked with silver, and pale gold rims the silhouettes of the hills, I drive with my dogs up to the Mukutan, to watch the sun setting behind the lake, and the evening shadows settle over the valleys and plains of the Laikipia plateau.'<BR><BR>Kuki Gallmann's haunting memoir of bringing up a family in Kenya in the 1970s first with her husband Paulo, and then alone, is part elegaic celebration, part tragedy, and part love letter to the magical spirit of Africa.
