Egypt Diary 1914-1915
"From a ground-floor room at the end of one block shone a light. It came from a canteen. I saw others were busy while I was lowering a pint of shandy. I was so dry that I could not taste it-I could only just feel it. We felt better. Where there was beer there was hope."Alec Riley was a signaller in the British Army's 42nd (East Lancashire) Division. Egypt Diary 1914-1915 tells of the mobilisation of the division at the outbreak of war, and the territorials' eight-month-long period of training and garrison duty in Egypt prior to being deployed to Gallipoli. It brings to life the strange and exotic sights met by the Lancashire lads, most of whom had previously travelled no further than the annual camps held in North Wales.Written in Alec Riley's dry style, the diary relates with wit and humour the many fascinating experiences and events Riley and his comrades encountered. Interactions with Egyptian locals are interspersed with Riley's acute (and at times subversive) observations of his own officers. Desert marches, exercises and various mundane duties are recorded, as well as measures taken to guard canteens against Australian raiding parties. The book is lavishly illustrated with contemporary soldiers' photographs of Egypt and four specially-produced maps. The editors, Michael Crane and Bernard de Broglio, have added extensive footnotes and detailed biographies of almost 40 officers and men who come to life in Alec Riley's writings.

Journey in the Grand Sahara of Africa and Through Time
The years between 1890 and 1905 were the height of imperialism as West European powers conquered much of Africa. Italy, which had been able to get a very small share in the West European scramble for Africa, had its eye on Tripoli and Benghazi. Planning to capture all of Africa and very busy with Morocco in those days, France also regarded Tripoli and Benghazi as being free for the taking.
The Ottoman Sultan, Abdulhamid II, was looking for an ally and found it in his own lands. There was a very brave order, fond of its independence, based in the south of Benghazi and in the middle of the green Kufra Oasis; its name was the Senusi Movement.
Journey in the Grand Sahara of Africa and Through Time takes you to October 1895 to accompany Azmzâde Sadık el-Müeyyed on a mission for Sultan Abdulhamid II to go before Sayed Mohamed Al Mahdi Al Senusi, the leader of the most influential religious movement in North Africa at the time known as the Ikhwan or Brotherhood.
Fast forward more than a century and their descendants tie the past to the present against the background of an ongoing struggle for the future of Libya by regional and global powers. Gıyasiddin Gökkent, Sadık Pasha's son, explains The Foreign Policy of Sultan Abdulhamid. Orhan Osmansoy looks at the centuries old affinity between Turkey and Libya in his article titled A Resurrected Alliance. Ala Fakhri Al Senusi provides his Vision for the Future of Libya. Gıyas Müeyyed Gökkent traces the beginning of the Ottoman presence in North Africa as a counterbalance to West European powers and provides an overview of the prospects for Libya after a decade long civil conflict. Iklil Azmzâde looks at the roots of Sadık Pasha in his piece on the Azmzâde dynasty. Describing one of three missions to Africa by Sadık Pasha to counter the scramble for Africa by West European states, this volume, originally published as a travel book, has been supplemented with Sadık Pasha's subsequent report to the sultan and is a companion to The Ethiopia Book of Travels.

On Horseback Through Asia Minor
They don't make them like Frederick Burnaby anymore. With Russia and Turkey preparing for war and the implications are global. Captain Burnaby of the elite "Blues" regiment heads into the Anatolian interior to assess the Russian threat, the Turkish resistance and the looming clash of the Muslim and Christian worlds. More than a century later, Burnaby's thousand-mile trek into the twilight of the Ottoman Empire still reads like tale told at end of an epic dinner party. Part witty travelogue, cultural insights, and charming intelligence report, On Horseback Through Asia Minor is a classic of the Great Game that is still as entertaining as the day it was written.

Constantinople
This substantial account of Constantinople - or Istanbul as it is known today - is both a history and a guide to that magnificent and fabled metropolis where east and west have met for many centuries. Written in 1915 when, as Stamboul, the city was the last stop on the Orient Express, it is illustrated with many rare period photographs. This book for the general reader evokes all the colour and richness of the ultimate oriental city, ancient capital of the Byzantine and Ottoman empires, captured on the brink of modernization in the first years after the revolution. The author describes everyday life in the city, - the features of permanent interest such as mosques, gardens, fountains, the traces of Byzantium and the quays of the Golden Horn as well as the feasts, custom's, festivals and holidays that once enlivened Constantinople but are now only a memory. The work concludes with an account of the revolution and of the effects of World War I on the city. This is a portrait of the Istanbul that all travellers hope to find - and still can, in the pages of this book.
